Day 6, Creative Chemistry 103: Surfaces & Substrates

Posted on

For our Day 6 lesson, Tim described various surfaces and substrates.  He challenged us to use techniques from the first five days on one of these surfaces.

I created two cards, one is a sympathy card, the other a thinking of you card.  Here they are with the technique & surfaces used:

Distress Highlight Stamping on substrate, mounted on Distress Painted burlap

Distress Luminous Mica on woodgrain cardstock, mounted on substrate

Thanks for sticking with me through all my Creative Chemistry 103 posts.  When I get my reference book put together, I’ll share it.

No trick, there will be treats!

treat bags 10-27-2014 3-58-03 PM

I enjoy creating treat bags for my grandchildren for Halloween.  There are small toys, drawing supplies, healthy snacks and a bit of candy stuffed into the bags.  I made them each a card, too.

I used the (now discontinued) Accordion Album die from Sizzix to create the cards.

I used scraps, stickers and embellishments from my stash, plus some die cuts.  The Art with Art Challenge at Eileen Hull’s blog is Tricks and Treats, perfect for my album cards!  I encourage you to go have a look at all the great art that’s been submitted.

I’ll end my post with Happy Halloween wishes and a couple of photos of a witch doll I created four years ago.  She’s made with a wire armature and muslin body, head and limbs.  If you have any questions about her, ask away.

Distress Photo Tinting – CC3C #12

Posted on

Challenge #12 at Studio L3 is an awesome way to add a vintage look to your pictures, old or new.  You can find the technique on page 41 of Tim Holtz’s  A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol.3.

Recently, we were looking through some old family photos of Dick’s.  I remembered him showing me this one of him on a horse taken 60 years ago!

dick on horse 9-27-2014 1-11-10 PMI scanned it into the computer and following Tim’s technique, I created this 5″ x 7″ canvas:

I used kraft core Core’dinations and some fun embossing folders to create the background.  A few buttons from my stash were added for the finishing touch.

The Funkie Junkie Boutique is the sponsor of Challenge 12, with a fabulous $25 shopping spree for a lucky challenge entrant.  And as in all the challenges, the “Curiosity Crew’s Choice” will chose a winner who will receive an awesome assortment Tim’s products, courtesy of Tim himself.

Thanks for coming by.  I encourage you to go visit Studio L3 to check out all the different ways the photo tinting technique has been used.

Oh, Deer!

It’s time for the Compendium of Curiosities III Challenge #9 over  at StudioL3.  You can find the technique for this challenge on page 63 of A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol.3, Stamps & Framelits.

I used a set called Holiday Joy.  Although the set is designed for holiday projects, I used it in a non-holiday way.  Here in my area we frequently see deer standing by the side of the road with trees behind them.  I tried to recreate a scene like that on my little 4″ x 4″ canvas.

9 #1 8-23-2014 5-19-33 PM

I used Distress Paint for my background and to stencil the rays.  I used Distress Markers and Inks for my stamping.  After I cut out the images with the corresponding dies, I cut the antlers off and “adjusted” the head of the lighter colored deer to create a doe.  I glued the deer together is a side-by-side stance and the attached them to the canvas with foam tape. I added an Emerson quote that seemed fitting for the scene.

I put the canvas on a small easel (after it took the photo) and put it on mantel.  It will be another art surprise for my grandkids to find!

Inspiration Emporium is the sponsor for CCC3 #9.  I’m sure I would have no problem spending a gift certificate there!

Thanks for visiting.  Until next time, Vic

Faded Layers

Challenge #8 of StudioL3’s CC3C is Tim’s Faded Layers technique from A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol.3,  page 58.  The Funkie Junkie Boutique is the sponsor of challenge #8, check it out for a ton of fun offerings.

I cut an 8 1/2″ by 11″ sheet of glossy cardstock into quarters and created four different backgrounds.  Here are the three I haven’t used yet:

I’ve got some ideas for the cards I’ll create with them.  I needed a birthday card for Monday so I used my fourth background for this card:

I love how the stamped and die cut elements (Sizzix Sweet Day) pop on the background.  If you want some great inspiration, head over to StudioL3 and check out all the fabulous faded layer entries.

Thanks for stopping by.  Until next time, Vic
